First of all i would like to explain that their are two different versions to this game:
Version One was created by Ubisoft Shanghai who did the second Splinter Cell, Pandora Tommorow. It was created with a new engine for the next generation console and windows pc's. This version is played out in real time, not flash back's like Version Two.
Version Two was created by Ubisoft Montreal who did the original Splinter Cell and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. It was created using the same engine as the previous games for the older consoles (except the Wii of course) so gameplay and User Interface are like the others.
I have only got the Version One for the PC so therefore i will be reviewing the game from my experiences on the PC. One thing i want to get out of the way straight away is the amount of bugs/glitches that encountered with the game. To start it off i had to download a patch just so i could play the game, plus read the community forums to find out how to get around certain bugs. Perhaps its because i have the newer 8800GTS on my computer, but i had problems with my avatar from the beginning (which i solved by turning down video options). Another problem i encountered was with Audio, when listening to an npc while on a level the sound would soften so much as so i could not hear them, this happened through out the game, and while not a major problem it is a bit annoying. Now that thats out of the way, lets begin.
In version one the game is played chronically, rather than version two's flash backs of the operation. You start off the game in the almost same style as the previous games, the first level being that of stealth. Once completed you move onto the main storyline, your character Sam Fisher's only daughter is killed by a drunk driver. Fisher's life goes down hill, so in order to recover he goes on one of the most dangerous missions he can get, going deep undercover with a terrorist group known as the JBA (John Browns Army). He is sent to prison, where he has to get friendly with a known JBA member and has to help him escape, once you do so you're recruited into the JBA.
Here is where its gets interesting, and breaks apart from the previous games. You work as a double agent for the NSA while infiltrating the JBA, and you have to balance their trusts as you move along the game. Completing JBA assignments will help gain their trust and the same with the NSA, however doing something wrong may cause you to lose their trust. A common instance for losing JBA's trust is when walking around the JBA's headquarters, being caught in restricted area's while gaining intelligencte for the NSA will take your trust metre down. At other times you will be forced to decide whether to complete a JBA objective or a NSA objective, completing one will gain their trust while losing trust with the other.
The gameplay varies as well, the NSA prefers you to move around in stealth with minimal civilian deaths. Where as the JBA prefers you to kill. So at one stage you may be creeping around the insides of a bui
Overall a really fun game, and aside for the bugs of the PC version a great game.
