First of all i would like to point out that i have not completed this game, actually i dont think im through it very far. Once i got through the first area, almost blitzing ever race and event, i got to a point where i cant win at all. Not even upgrading to a better car helps me along much further.
Lets start at the start first though. Overall the concept is great, instead of racing around on the streets, they move the game to the race track with race day events. Basically its everything you would imagine from a modified racing events, big centre stage with its own MC and DJ, loud raging music, and lots of beautiful cars and girls. A Concept that translates well into the real world. Perhaps if big corporations started running these around the world, it may get the hoons off the road and onto the track.
The visuals of the game are great, a real step up from that of Carbon and Most wanted, the cars look superb and the damage you get in the car looks far more realistic than they have done before. Damage was supposed to be one of the key features they talked about before the games release. While yes it does look good and realistic, it just gets annoying having to fork out money because the other racers decide to collide with you, perhaps a third party insurance type of thing is needed in the next game?
Now it's time for me to tell you about Krystal Forscutt's and Sayoko Ohashi's involvement in the game. Out of all the NFS girls from the last few games, these two would have to be the worst. Now its nothing personal against the two beautiful ladies, its their under use in the game (only appear as starter grid girls and show girls). The previous NFS girls had characters that actually fits into the storyline, where these two are just there for looks and for promotion. In Australia especially, Krystal was featured on numerous front covers of magazines, yet she had no real purpose ingame. If they are going to have known people ingame they should of done what they did with Emmanuelle Vaugier (Carbon), Josie Maran (Most Wanted) and Brook Burke (Underground 2) by giving them character.
Lets get into the cars, the line up is fantastic. Its no Grand Tourismo in amount of cars, but in my opinion there is a good selection. A balance Between Tuners, Exotics, Muscles and Supers was found while still having alot of choice. But from there my opinion on the cars goes down hill. First of all the customization is crap to be honest, every car is modified the same way, its the same parts and the same looks on all the cars. And there isnt that many good ones to choose from. Anyone who modifies cars know that each car (atleast manufacturer) has its own list of body kits that can be put on the car. And this new way of putting vinyls (stickers) on the car is just too complicated. I just wanted to put two racing stripes across the hood, roof, boot and spoiler on my Dodge Charge and it took me for ages to finally get it done. I give them credit that you can get so much more customization out of it, but it takes far too long to really justify it. Especially when you have to get so many cars.
Which brings me onto my next critisism, why do i have to have a different car for each event? The price of building these cars to modify them and buy them is steep enough without having to do it Five times. Why can't i have my Circuit Car drift? or Drag? That way i dont have to buy a level one turbo kit for each car...
I could keep going on with this, there are so many mistakes made in this game (let alone bugs and glitches), heres my advice... make Underground 3! Keep the Arcade style driving, keep the storylines, keep the (in my opinion) better soundtrack, upgrade the graphics, make it more fun. Making the game more realistic like Gran Tourismo has made this could be great game, simply crap.
