Welcome to the Holy Lands during the Third Crusade, Europeans are trying to reconquer the Holy Lands after the failed attempt of the Second Crusade. You are a member of a brotherhood of Assassins, who is given a number of targets for assassination. Then you awake on a bed like machine, a simple bartender who has been kidnapped by a bunch of scientist who believe they can, by the way of the machine, access memories of your ancestors, the assassin, and find the secrets they seek.
That's the premise of this awesome game, a clever mix of Historic Fact, Artistic License and Science Fiction. The setting? An amazing group of cities, which are highly detailed and vast, both in visuals and population, which are all interconnected by a beautiful reconstruction of the Holy Lands' landscape. The Characters? Fleshed out and believable, each have their own unique look at current situation.
Overall an excellent game, i could praise nearly every detail but somewhere somethings which may have looked great in concept just failed to keep up the standard of the rest of the game:
Drunks/Retards/Beggars: When you first encounter each one of these interesting inhabitants of each of the great cities, you think wow they put some effort into making this game realistic by adding them in. I wouldn't of thought to add this kind of realism. But while they add the realism, after the initial wow they become annoying. Eventually you can walk around on the ground without getting harrased by one of these npc's and its by far worse when you are on a mission and require stealth when one of them breaks your cover. Perhaps a couple spread around the city would of been ok, but in my opinion there were far too many of them.
Roof Guards: One of the hottest things at the moment is freerunning and parkour, which is excellently intergrated into the game, has to be one of the highlights of the game that never gets old while playing the game. But these Roof Guards spoil it so much, just trying to get from one place to another along the rooftops becomes a challenge due to the guards threatening for you to get off, while they are easily dispatched most of the time, but when you get to the later part of the game they get far too aggressive. Why can't i run along rooftops? That can't be illegal can it? It's not like you can run along the ground due to getting harrased by the previous mentioned npc's.
Combat: An excellent concept that just translated wrong into the game, being able to use one button to attack and do flashy counter attacks. It makes you look good by doing some excellent looking attacks, but after a while it becomes far too repeatitive and i found boring. Especially when buttons don't seem to respond fast enough to your commands. In the end, I found my short sword a far more better weapon because it was far quicker to attack.
Intelligence Gathering Missions: before killing each of your assigned targets, you must gather sufficient amount of intelligence on the target. Either by pickpocketting, interrogating or doing Informer Challengers from other Assassins from the brotherhood. By the Ninth target i got so bored with them, but i have heard that the PC Version has an extra four different missions but i don't know if that will fix it.
Please don't be put off by these small problems, the rest of the game is perfect. I would definately give it a 9 out of 10 (only reason it didnt get the 10 is due to those problems). It is one of the best games i have ever played, and if Ubisoft find a way to fix this then it will be the most perfect game out, it could even rival GTA4 but i will have to hold judgement until i play GTA4. If this is what they did with Assassin Creed, i seriously can't wait to see what Ubisoft do with Splinter Cell conviction!
